Most of us go to the theater to be entertained or inspired, to learn something new or to witness the familiar. But we may not often consider the story behind the performance - the creative spark that led the actors to the art form, what other hands were required to stage the show, what it means to be part of a theater company. In North Carolina, the theater arts have played an unusually prominent role in our state's history and the understanding of our roots as North Carolinians.

In EVERYDAY PLAYERS, a one-hour documentary, we are tracing the development of community-based theater in North Carolina in the 20th century. Along the way we will examine how the creation of plays that sprang from and spoke directly to the lives of people in local communities turned into a national movement that thrives today. Archival photos and film, oral histories both past and present, interviews with well-known and unsung theater participants, and footage of productions in progress will provide a fast-paced and energetic look at this most democratic and participatory art form.
