FACES FROM THE FLOOD
The passage of Hurricane Floyd through eastern North Carolina in September 1999 produced an epic flood that ranks as the most widespread, destructive and deadly natural disaster in North Carolina’s history. Sixty-six counties were declared disaster areas. Damage estimates exceeded six billion dollars. There were 52 reported fatalities. More than 60,000 homes were flooded, most of them hit without warning in the middle of the night. Hundreds had to be rescued from rooftops and submerged vehicles.
In this hour-long documentary, narrated by Reynolds Price and based on the book by Richard Moore and Jay Barnes, we learn how Floyd tested eastern North Carolina and its people like no other previous experience. It brought out a kind of heroism seldom seen among small town citizens, and after the worst of it, a special generosity emerged from people all across the state and far beyond. Some of the heroes of the flood offer their recollections of that experience-- the rescues and losses, the grief and fear, and the remarkable courage that rose up well before the floodwaters began to recede.
A portion of proceeds from the sale of this DVD will be donated to the American Red Cross and NC Hurricane Disaster Relief.
